Crying Wolf

It's not unusual to hear me claim that something is the "best thing ever". In all honesty, this usually isn't true. Today is (or rather, yesterday was) an exception. The reason? Rick Astley, who scored a number one hit in 1987 with Never Gonna Give You Up, who has never won an MTV award of any kind, has been nominated (via the internet) for the Best Act Ever alongside a small short-list including the likes of Britney Spears and U2.

You can vote for him here as many times as you like. VOTE CONTINUOUSLY.

If you're all a bit confused about how a one-hit-wonder from the 1980s could pop up in a best act ever award on a contemporary music network, the answer is Rick Rolling. This is the practice of linking fellow internet users to a video of Astley's only hit, Never Gonna Give You Up, claiming it to be something else - usually something apparently fantastic (such as a video of a hover car or cure for cancer) or something that the user has been desperately seeking (that funny clip from that obscure movie). The result is them being greeted, not with what they were expecting, but with that unmistakeable drum loop as Rick gyrates into "We're no strangers to love". Comments on the Youtube video of Never Gonna Give You Up include "omfg, why does this keep happening to me!!!!" and "wtf?! this isn't a Halo 4 trailer! what is this crap???"
